Lunch Program

The lunch program provides students with a healthy, nutritious meal and is available Monday through Friday.  Our lunch program is a partnership with local businesses, such as Rosario’s Pizza and the Oreland Inn, who provide the meals.  Lunch is organized and served by parent volunteers.

Menus are sent home on a monthly basis and families have the option of choosing from any or all of the selections available.  Each meal costs $2.50; payment is submitted with your menu selection.  In addition to the meal, students may purchase juice and milk (40˘).

Enrichment Program

Holy Martyrs School offers an after school learning program for students in grades K-8.  The Enrichment Program allows students to continue their learning and to explore new areas of interest outside the classroom setting.  Classes are taught by a combination of parent and parish volunteers as well as by paid specialized instructors.  Some of the programs offered include drama club, glee club, school newspaper, art, chess, dance, and cooking.  HMS varies the programs offered each session in order to bring new learning opportunities to the students.

By:  Z. Demkovitz

Enrichment classes are held in two sessions during the course of the school year.  Session 1 typically runs for six weeks beginning at the end of September and Session 2 runs for six weeks starting in early February.  The week following the conclusion of each session is reserved for make up classes as needed.  Instructors for these programs will publish a schedule at the start of each class.

Enrichment classes generally are held Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.   Students are provided with a healthy snack and juice at the beginning of each class.  Dismissal time is 5:00 p.m. and we ask that all parents wait outside the school building when picking up their child.  This allows dismissal to run in a smooth and orderly fashion for the moderator.

Classes are subject to a snack fee, as well as any fees necessary to cover supplies and instructor costs.  Information on classes being offered, as well as details on age requirements and costs, is provided prior to each session along with a registration form.

Student Council

Student Council promotes leadership, service, and spirit among HMS students.  Student Council members organize service projects and fundraisers to benefit a variety of charities throughout the school year.  The members encourage their fellow students to actively participate in these service projects, leading by their own example.  Past service projects have included canned good collections, Operation Santa Claus, and a snow-shoveling service for elderly parishioners.  Student Council also holds “school spirit” events to help foster a sense of fun and family among HMS students.  These include the Catholic Schools Week Tombola, a school talent show, and other activities during the school year as chosen by the council members.

Students in Grades 4-8 are eligible to run for Student Council and are elected by their classmates.  One student in Grades 4-6 respectively is elected as a Student Council representative.  The offices of vice president, secretary, and treasurer are elected from Grades 7-8, while the Student Council president is elected from Grade 8.  Elections are held during the fall of each school year and elected members serve, under the guidance of a faculty member, for the course of the school year.

Summer Camp

Holy Martyrs Summer Camp runs from the end of the school year through the month of July.  Children ages 3-10 are eligible to participate.  Registration is on a weekly basis, and you may choose to register for any number of weeks.  (The weeks do not need to be consecutive.)   Summer camp is run by members of the Holy Martyrs School staff.  The children participate in a daily prayer service, arts and crafts, sports and outdoor fun, exercise, science and social studies activities, weekly cooking activities and field trips.

Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.   Before and after care is available if needed.  Registration for summer camp is typically held in the early spring, but spaces may still be available for Summer 2005.  Our theme this summer is "U.S.A. This Land Is Your Land".  For more information on summer camp costs, before and after care costs, or camp itself, please contact the school office at 215-887-2044.  When camp begins, you can also call 215-572-8605.

C.Y.O. - Catholic Youth Organization

Holy Martyrs C.Y.O. Sports are offered to parish children in fourth grade through high school, regardless of their skill level.  The sports programs include baseball, basketball, football, softball, track, and volleyball. C.Y.O. is set apart from other athletic organizations by its ability to incorporate Catholic values in conjunction with athletic activities.  This encourages good sportsmanship and the spirit of competition while at the same time fostering self-confidence and social growth.  The primary fundraiser for our C.Y.O. Sports teams is the annual “Nite at the Races.”  The profits  cover the vast majority of expenses necessary to run the program, thereby keeping costs low for families.  At the end of the school year, there is an awards breakfast to honor the athletes, along with their families and coaches, for support of and participation in the many Holy Martyrs C.Y.O. programs.

In addition, C.Y.O. dances are held at area parishes and Holy Martyrs Students are invited to attend these fun, parent-supervised events.

Montgomery County Intermediate Unit Services

Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (M.C.I.U.), under Act 89, provides speech, remedial reading and mathematics, guidance, and counseling services to the students of Holy Martyrs School.

Speech-Language Services

If a parent or teacher is concerned with a student's speech or language skills, the child may be referred for screening and testing.  If he or she meets the eligibility criteria, the student will be scheduled for therapy.  An M.C.I.U. clinician will work with students during school hours once or twice weekly.

Remedial Reading and Mathematics

Remedial instruction in basic reading and/or mathematics skills is provided to students through a comprehensive program of referral, diagnosis, prescription, and instruction by remedial specialists employed by the M.C.I.U.  Frequency and length of instruction are determined by the unique needs of the student.  The remedial specialists work with the classroom teachers, administrators, and parents to provide a program that directly supplements the regular school curriculum.

Guidance and Counseling Services

Parents, teachers, administrators, or the students themselves may request guidance and counseling services.  M.C.I.U. counselors work with students individually and/or in small groups to assist them in solving personal and school problems, as well as in identifying individual needs.  The school psychologist may also provide short-term or individual counseling relating to school adjustment problems, learning difficulties, peer/teacher relationships, home-related problems, and social and emotional problems.
