Art

Instructor:  Mrs. Hucker

Children in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade receive weekly instruction in Art.  Our Art program is an integral part of the entire school curriculum.  One look at our hallways and classrooms will show you what talented and creative children we have at Holy Martyrs School and what a wonderful art teacher we have in Mrs. Hucker.

In addition to instruction in drawing and painting in the fine arts, weekly art classes give children the opportunity to experiment with different mediums such as charcoals, pastels, mosaics and watercolors.  Students become acquainted with the versatility of each medium and learn to express themselves through their own creativity and imagination.  Our students also participate in and have earned distinctions in many art competitions each year such as the AmVets Art Contest, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Annual Art Contest.

Band
Instructor:  Mr. Derrick Banks

Students in Grades Four through Eight have the opportunity to participate in our school's band program through Northeastern Music Programs, Inc.  Our band instructor, Mr. Banks, gives weekly music lessons in small groups in the following instruments:  drum, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and bells.  Mr. Banks practices with the students to prepare for a Christmas performance as well as the Spring Festival of the Arts.  His love of music encourages his students to learn far more than the basics of any instrument and expand their own talent.

The fees for band instruction are approximately $400 per year (can be made in two payments to Northeastern Music Program), in addition to the fee for leasing the instrument from Northeastern Music, or another music store of your choice.  Some parents do choose to purchase an instrument after their child has shown a continued interest.  To learn more about Northeastern Music Programs, Inc. click here.

Library
Instructor:  Mrs. Gallagher

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 receive weekly instruction in Library.  Mrs. Gallagher teaches her younger students how to use the library, library citizenship and how to select and care for books.  They are taught responsibility through borrowing books from the library and returning them on a timely basis.  Students also study the Dewey Decimal System as a way to help them in choosing books in any library.

As students progress through the middle and upper grades, they learn about various reference tools, biographies, copyright rules, and many other important research tools needed as they progress towards high school and beyond.

Reading is strongly encouraged in all students and our older students can choose to participate in the annual Reading Olympics.  Reading Olympics is a year long commitment for students that wish to compete in the annual competition.  Teams are given the Reading Olympics book list for their grade level, and read as many of the books as they can throughout the year, paying special attention to the details.  These details later make the basis for many questions in the competition that is held each April in the Montgomery & Bucks County area.  This year's Reading Olympics competition was held in Colonial Middle School, with thousands of students from all over the area answering hundreds of questions about the entire list of books.  Holy Martyrs' two teams each won a blue ribbon; the highest honor there is!  Great Job!

Mrs. Demkovitz also prepares the students for both the Christmas Show and Spring Festival of the Arts, which showcase all of the students' hard work throughout the year.

Physical Education

Instructor:  Mrs. Burns

Children learn a great deal about themselves and others through activity and play.  At a time when they are beginning to enjoy participating together, it is crucial that these experiences are positive and nurturing.  The most important characteristic any child can possess is positive self-esteem, for it is from that seed that all other grown sprouts.  Our Physical Education Program is dedicated to providing positive growth experiences for all children at all levels of development.
